Yes in My Backyard Movement in Australia?

Hi all,

I’m looking to find out whether an initiative similar to The STOP’s interpretation of the Yes In My Backyard Movement (YIMBY) is operating in Australia. See http://thestop.org/find-your-garden-match/ for a brief description of their program.

Essentially, home owners with space in their backyard share this space at no cost with people who do not have access to land, but who would like to cultivate a vegetable garden. Home owners and gardeners match up according to their resources and needs, with any additional terms negotiated between the two.

I haven’t had any luck tracking down a similar initiative in Australia, and would be grateful to anyone who could provide some useful leads. Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,
Bronte

Hi Bronte,
3000acres has been trialing a similar scheme in Alamein with the Alamein Neighborhood Learning Centre and I hear of people doing it independently from time to time (Gumtree is great for that). It can be quite difficult navigating the relationships so I think it needs real commitment from the home owner and the gardener and ideally a previously established mutual trust.
Happy to discuss further if you have any more questions.
Cheers,
Pippa
